Locum Lifestyle: Challenges and Rewards

Locum lifestyle perks include flexibility, challenging work and a multitude of rewards. During Locum Tenens Week, Wapiti Medical Staffing is sharing insights from some of our outstanding providers. Imo K. is a Nurse Practitioner (NP) who has been a locum with Wapiti for two years. Her medical career spans over forty years- including twenty-six years as an NP. She has worked in Primary Care, Urgent Care, corrections, and now as a hospitalist. Imo is a native of Albany, MN. She and her husband have three grown children and four active grandsons. We asked Imo for her insights into life as a locum tenens.

What inspired you to become a locum tenens provider?

I had the chance to work at the critical care access hospital, where I worked for many years as a Registered Nurse before becoming a Nurse Practitioner. Seeing that many of the same staff were still there was nice. The flexibility is also a plus. I love to travel, and this allows me to do that. I tell people that I work so that I can travel! What could be better than that?

As a locum, what do you find most rewarding about your work?

I love working as a hospitalist in a small rural hospital. It is so rewarding to help people when they are often very sick. It is equally rewarding to see them improve so they can return home. I truly enjoy the challenges that arise every day!

How do you manage the challenges of being a locum, such as adapting to different work environments or team dynamics?

I only work at one site, so this has not been an issue. We have a great team of providers who support each other. Of course, our manager, Jatelyn, at Wapiti is fantastic to work with!

What advice would you give to someone considering a career as a locum tenens?

I would encourage providers to try working as a locum provider as it provides flexibility and extra income. It also allows you to try out a position to see if you want to pursue another interest. It’s a great opportunity to have new and different experiences.

We thank Imo K. for the care she provides and for taking the time to help Wapiti celebrate Locum Tenens Week!
