Q&A WITH KATHRYN HETTINGER, NP

Kathryn Hettinger is a nurse practitioner who has worked with Wapiti Medical Staffing since 2013.  She works at several Wapiti-affiliated sites in South Dakota.

What made you want to be a nurse practitioner?
I grew up with medicine in my family. My father was a surgeon in Aberdeen, SD. While in college, I realized nursing was my passion, knowing eventually I would further my nursing career. After starting my family, I had the opportunity to pursue that dream and advance my career. I graduated from a Family Nurse Practitioner Program and received my master’s degree in Nursing in 1996 from Marymount University in Arlington, VA.

What piqued your interest about Wapiti?
I wanted to be part of an organization that would allow me to work with a diverse group of patients and staff in multiple facilities/clinics. Wapiti has allowed me this experience.

What are your strengths, and how has Wapiti allowed you to utilize them?
I have many years’ experience providing high quality care to patients in a variety of facilities and communities.  I am flexible and adapt quickly and efficiently while providing care to patients with a multitude of complex medical issues. I work well with a diverse group of people and staff.

What attracts you to the locum lifestyle?

Locum work is ideal for me. It allows me a flexible schedule that I choose. I have more time at home with my husband, spend more time with my grown children, and can be a part of my grandchildren’s lives.

Why do you choose to work in rural America?
I grew up in Aberdeen, SD and have always been interested in returning to South Dakota. After my husband retired from the Marine Corps, he pursued his second passion (farming and ranching). I have been able to continue my career providing care to patients in underserved rural communities, especially our Native American communities. Wapiti has allowed me the opportunity to work at multiple sites and Indian Health Service (IHS) facilities.

What stands out to you about Wapiti?
Wapiti has always been very supportive, flexible and accommodating. Not only do they work with my needs and requests, they work around my personal and family issues when they do arise.
